History

The Design, Simulation, Manufacturing: The Innovation Exchange (DSMIE) conference was founded through the shared vision and dedication of three like-minded professionals: Prof. Vitalii Ivanov, Prof. Oleksandr Liaposhchenko, and Mr. X, whose identity remains undisclosed at his request.

Their common ambition was to establish a scientific conference that would redefine the standards of engineering events in Ukraine by combining academic excellence, international cooperation, industrial relevance, and a strong commitment to quality. Rather than becoming another large-scale conference focused on the number of submissions, DSMIE was conceived as a selective international forum where scientific merit is the primary criterion for acceptance.

DSMIE was founded by the Faculty of Technical Systems and Energy Efficient Technologies of the Sumy State University in 2018. Since 2019, the International Association for Technological Development and Innovations (IATDI) has made a substantial contribution to the development of the DSMIE Conference Series and has been actively involved in the organization and coordination of its subsequent editions. Through this cooperation, DSMIE has evolved from a national academic conference into a globally recognized international conference series, bringing together universities, research institutions, and industry partners from around the world.

The inaugural DSMIE Conference was held in 2018 and marked a significant milestone in the internationalization of engineering research in Ukraine. It became the first conference in Ukraine in the fields of mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, materials engineering, and chemical engineering to feature an entire conference ecosystem (including organization, communication with participants, scientific presentations, discussions, networking activities, and official events) conducted entirely in English.

DSMIE also became the first conference in Ukraine in these engineering disciplines to have its peer-reviewed proceedings published in the internationally recognized Lecture Notes in Mechanical Engineering (LNME) book series by Springer Nature. The conference proceedings are indexed in both Scopus and the Web of Science Core Collection, establishing a new benchmark for internationally recognized publishing of engineering conferences in Ukraine.

Vision

DSMIE serves as a meeting point where representatives of universities, research organizations, industrial companies, governmental institutions, and innovation stakeholders come together to exchange knowledge, discuss emerging technological challenges, identify common research interests, develop strategic partnerships, and initiate new international research and innovation projects.

Recognizing the growing importance of industry engagement, the conference introduced the Business to Science special session in 2023. This initiative provides industrial partners with an opportunity to present real-world technological challenges and innovation needs directly to the international scientific community. The session facilitates matchmaking between industry and academia, enabling companies to identify research partners capable of developing practical, scientifically grounded solutions to complex engineering problems while simultaneously creating new opportunities for collaborative research, innovation, and technology transfer.

International Impact

Since its establishment in 2018, DSMIE has continuously expanded its international reach, attracting participants from leading universities, research organizations, industrial enterprises, governmental institutions, and innovation ecosystems worldwide.

Over the years, the conference has welcomed more than 1,486 participants from 53 countries, reflecting its growing recognition as an international platform for scientific excellence and engineering innovation.

Beyond scientific presentations, DSMIE has developed into a vibrant ecosystem for building international research networks, fostering strategic partnerships, preparing collaborative proposals for European and international funding programs, and strengthening long-term cooperation between academia and industry.

Throughout its history, DSMIE has remained faithful to the principle envisioned by its founders: prioritizing excellence, fostering meaningful international cooperation, bridging science and industry, and accelerating engineering innovation for the benefit of society.
